Podcasts are an integral part of my daily sanity program. I commute via transit twice a day, 45 minute trips, so the audible distraction from the drudge is a godsend. Fortunately there are a number of good design podcasts available out there. This allows me to add at least an hour of design related stimulus per day that would otherwise be filled by music and comedy podcasts (honourable mention to Radiolab, which I adore)
So here’s a brief list of some of my favourites:
Design Matters with Debbie Millman
Top of the list and for good reason. Hosted by Debbie Millman, president of the design division at Sterling Brands. Debbie’s guests are the heavies and legends of the trade. Her interview style is relaxed, warm and well polished. Debbie makes the guests feel at ease and thus, they feel comfortable talking about themselves and their career. I was startled how many of these successful designers either didn’t finish design school or lack formal education. Footnote, I dare you to listen to the Steven Heller’s interview and not feel like you’ve done nothing with your life.
Deeply Graphic Design Podcast
Hosted by a well rounded trio; the lead designer Wes Mcdowell , the Creative Director Brandon Voss and the successful freelancer Mickelle Morrison.
Refreshingly, they focus more on the business side of design work which is audible gold to anyone performing freelance work.
Let’s Make Mistakes
This podcast is more of a guilty pleasure. Hosted by the infamous Mike Montiero and lead researcher Katie Gillum. Mr. Montiero’s company, Mule, is a web-design firm but the trials and tribulations with clients and logistics are universal. Be warned though, the ability to stay on topic and focus on design often proves difficult as Mike is a very strong personality and one of the reasons I look forward to the podcast.
Update November 6th 2102:
Katie has been replaced by the equally entertaining Leah Reich
Creator and host Roman Mars takes us on a tour of what at the core is true “design”, the 99% of the heavy lifting and thought that brings you the beautiful 1% that you actually see and use. These podcasts are quite short so they are precious when posted. Less is more
Update November 6th , 2012
have a favourite new design podcast to add to the list:
On The Grid : http://onthegrid.co/
“Every week, the three of us call in for a conversation about design’s effect on the world, and the world’s effect on design”
This is a fantastic podcast! I must say, I get excited when a new episode pops up.
The hosts, their background and what they bring to the table, really give the podcast a fair bit of weight in my opinion.
- Matt MacInerny: A graphic designer at the prestigious juggernaut Pentagram
- Andy Mangold: Graphic Designer and co-founder of Friends Of The Web
- Dan Auer: Graphic Designer with a pedigree in type design and user interface design.
This trio tackle the biggest design news and issues of the moment.
They’ve gone the extra step of setting up a sub-reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/onthegrid/ where listeners can post new design related subjects and vote on subjects posted. The guys shape their podcast around whatever subject receives the most votes and has resulted in some very poignant discussions.
